Download A Free Goal Setting Worksheet & See What You Can Achieve

Thursday 13th October 2005

by Glenn Fisher

Take a look at this quote from one reader in regard to the problems standing in their way when it comes to achieving financial success:

"The first thing is procrastination and this is caused by having too many options available and not knowing where or how to start...

"The second thing is trying to do too many things at the same time. Not having a clear desired outcome nor having a well conceived actionable plan is also a problem."
CE

Reading through the feedback I’ve received, these are both problems encountered by a lot of readers.

I’ll be looking at procrastination again in the future, but because we have covered it a few times recently, today I wanted to focus on the second part of that query, specifically "Not having a clear desired outcome," or an "actionable plan."

As I mention in September’s issue of Shortcut Confidential, this month can feel like time has flittered away and it’s too late to achieve goals this year. But in my opinion that’s nonsense.

It’s just a case of looking at the time we have left this year (112 days) and setting yourself a goal that’s achievable in that time.

I’ve designed a very simple plan to help you to do just that, but we’ll get to that in a moment.

First I want to talk about what kind of goals you should be setting...

How to use 2008’s 112 remaining days wisely

Here’s what I propose...

Together we’ll set one goal that you want to achieve by the end of the year and using the goal setting worksheet I’ve designed you can see how much time you need to spend each day to achieve that.

Your goal doesn’t need to be too extravagant. This is a mistake many people make.

‘Set up my own online business and make £10,000’ might be a too much by the end of the year. Of course, it might not be. But it really depends on how much spare time you’ve got to spend on achieving this goal.

I would recommend setting a goal that puts you on the road to something bigger next year or something that, by December, you can see what a difference it’s made. You should be able to see the money you’ve made or the skills you’ve developed.

You need to make sure your goal is achievable in the time you’ve got available to you. The time plan will help you assess that, but it’s no good choosing a goal that will take 8 hours a day to achieve if you only have 2 hours a day free.

You also need to think whether your goal will be something you already have skills to achieve or whether your goal will be to learn an entirely new skill.

For example, if you’re skilled in website design, you could make it your goal to design and promote a new website that will have 1,000 visitors by December. Or you could choose ignore your existing skills altogether and make it your goal to learn conversational French by the end of the year.

Have a think about it. There’s 112 days left in the year but I suggest you start on Monday to give us a few days to think about what you want to achieve. So the time plan actually works on 107 days.

I want you to send in your plans so I can see what goals you’ve set out. And as the 107 days tick away I want us to keep up to date and see how things are progressing.

And so you don’t think I’m fobbing all the work off on you guys, here’s the deal...

I’m going to do it myself!

I’ll complete my own plan and ‘show you mine’, so to speak, later in the week. And, as we go along, I’ll explain what I’m doing to achieve the goal I’ve set myself and how I tackle any problems that get in my way.

So, let me explain how the time plan works...

How to download and complete your ‘Goal Setting Worksheet’

I’ve kept this really simple...

First you need to write down your goal.

Then, you need to write down the five steps you need to take to achieve that goal.

I’ve kept it to five for a reason. If there are more steps than that, things get too complicated and you’re probably not going to achieve your goal. Break your goal down to five steps and stick with them.

Next you need to allocate the time you think you’ll need to complete each step. Be realistic, but be challenging.

Once you’ve worked out the total number of hours you can follow a simple calculation and find out how many minutes you need to spend each day to achieve your goal.

You should aim to spend that time on achieving your goal each day. No more, no less.

(Keep a separate note of days when you don’t, for whatever reason, take this time to work on your goal. That will come in handy at the end of the year, but don’t worry about it right now.)

As you can see, this is a really basic worksheet, but by having it there it gives us something to work to; it acts as a little reminder and reference point to see how we’re progressing.

So, over the next few days think about what goal you want to set yourself and fill the sheet in. I’ll do the same and on Friday I’ll show you my plan to give you an idea.

Right, you can download the plan template here - Goal Setting Worksheet. Print out a copy and get thinking.

Best Wishes,
Glenn Fisher
