Don't Lose Sight Of Your Goals

Thursday 3rd December 2009

by Glenn Fisher

Talk about goals...

For years my good friend L. has wanted to travel across North America.

Route 66, an open top Cadillac, Bruce Springsteen and all that jazz.

It’s a big ask.

You’re talking around 3,000 miles across; from Sinatra in New York, New York to Steve McQueen in San Fran.

To do it properly, you need a good few months.

Let’s face it, too: it aint cheap.

And though he doesn’t go without, L. isn’t leaking cash.

So, as far as goals go, it’s a big one.

That’s why I was so pleased to hear that yesterday L. took a massive step to achieving his goal...

He booked a three month return ticket to the USA.

So, how’d he do it?

Well, no matter what happened he kept that goal in mind.

And let me tell you, it’s been years...

In the meantime, he’s started his own business. He’s closed that business down. He’s set up a record label. And he’s set up an online store...

He’s moved cities. He’s changed jobs.

It would have been easy for him to lose sight of the goal and let life lead him down different paths until it was too late.

But he didn’t let it.

Through everything he’s doggedly kept that goal in mind. He knew that somehow he was always working towards it.

For the past few years he’s been working away, putting bit by bit to the side until as soon as he could afford to...

He did just a little bit - he booked the ticket.

Now he’s doing it. He’s committed.

And, no doubt, it’ll be a life changing experience.

For me, it’s an inspiring example of someone who didn’t give up on their goal.

And that’s why I wanted to share it with you today.

The takeaway here is simple...

Whatever happens in your life, don’t let it distract you from your goal.

L. kept icons of the US - a map on the wall, a Springsteen record in the hi-fi, a John Steinbeck book on the shelf - he was always close to something associated to that goal.

If he had a tough day at work, when he got home, signifiers of his goal were always there to remind him.

It can be so easy to lose focus. There is so much to distract us.

But as my friend L. proves...

If you surround yourself with reminders, if you keep it present in your mind, if you believe that one day it will happen...

It might take longer than you thought, but you can achieve your goal.

Best Wishes,
Glenn Fisher
