You’ll Achieve So Much More With This Simple Idea

Thursday 5th November 2009

by Glenn Fisher

A year soon goes, doesn’t it?

Saturday I fly out to Delray Beach, Florida to catch up with our colleagues over the pond...

And I can’t believe it’s a year since I was there last.

With an annual reference point like this, you tend to look back over the year...

You think about what you’ve done in that time, what you planned to do and weigh up if you achieved everything you hoped you would.

Looking back, I’m happy with what I’ve done, with what I’ve achieved since I was last there.

But it’s funny...

You see, re-reading one of my dispatches from Delray last year, I realise that one of the main reasons I’ve been able to do so much is thanks to a very simple idea I picked up there.

It was an idea Michael Masterson shared with me and I can tell you from first-hand experience that applying this very simple philosophy to your life will enable you to get more done.

Here’s a reminder of what I wrote...

Just do it... a little bit

This is a basic, fundamental rule that anyone looking to start their own online business - or develop and existing one - should take on board.

As Michael pointed out, ‘the hardest part of any goal is getting it into motion.’

You don’t need to think about it - it’s true.

Getting your idea off the ground is quite simply the biggest hurdle you face.

Why?

Well, numerous reasons: concerns over start-up cash, worried about the time it’ll take, not sure you’ve set everything up right to launch your enterprise.

Whatever it is, the important thing is the solution...

Just do it.

Hang on though; I’m not talking Nike-style ‘just do it’. No big, wide-ranging, vague remark. I’ll adjust it...

Just do a little bit.

A tiny bit. A quick piece of the puzzle. Set the wheels in motion.

DO NOT wait around planning, plotting, poking at what you COULD do, what the idea COULD become - just go with your gut straight off the bat and see what happens.

Put something in motion. Just one element...

Say you knew a ton about hotels - how to get the best ones, the cheapest ones, tricks to get upgraded easy.

You want to start an email service all about hotels. You think about how you could start it, all the elements you need to get the business going, to make it successful.

All this deliberation - the service never starts.

You thought too much - no motion.

All you need to do is start sending that email. Write it and send it to all your email contacts, your friends, family (email to me too). Don’t worry about how you can start reaching a bigger audience - that will come. For now, just put it in motion.

And above all else: put it in motion today, or at the latest tomorrow.

Don’t wait. As Michael pointed out... when someone comes to him with an idea and suggests ‘I’m going to do this next week, next month’, his gut reaction - it’s not going to work - is usually right.

The successes are the ones who come up and say, I’ve got this idea and I’m going to run with it tomorrow, or even today.

They get the basic element up and running, they put it in motion and then worry about all the other stuff further down the line.

You’ll achieve so much more with this simple idea

You can see that in my original dispatch I applied this theory solely to business.

But I realise now: this is bigger than that.

You can easily apply it to any area of life that requires action.

Just this month I did it myself...

You see, there’s a musician I like doing a tour of Germany in December. He rarely tours and hasn’t ever come to the UK.

I thought I’d like to go see him, but wasn’t sure if I had time to go to Berlin. I began to wonder if I should wait in the hope that he comes to England. Or maybe...

Bang!

The philosophy kicked in and I booked a ticket to the show. I just did a little bit.

Now I’ve got to get a flight, a hotel. I need to sort everything out that needs sorting out.

Because I’ve booked that ticket, because I’ve set the wheels in motion - I have to follow through with it.

You can see how effective this can be. As I said in my original dispatch: if you wait around planning, plotting, or poking at an idea, chances are it will never come to anything.

But if you just bite the bullet and get it going in some small way, you’ll be surprised by how well you’re able to adapt to the situation and follow through.

You really will achieve so much more by applying this simple idea to your life.

Best Wishes,
Glenn Fisher
