Don't Make This Mistake When Applying For A Job

Monday 11th January 2010

by Glenn Fisher

If you want to increase your chances of getting any job you ever apply for, you just need to do one thing.

Or rather, you need to avoid doing one thing.

You see, recently I advertised for a job. I got a load of applications in and I’ve been looking them over this weekend.

As you’d expect; there were some good ones and some not so good ones.

But one thing above all else struck me.

And seriously, no matter what job you apply for, make sure you never make this mistake...

Because there’s this kind of myth: when you’re applying for a job, you need to make your application stand out from the rest.

And it’s thought to do that you should be quirky, you should think outside the box, you should somehow do something different to what you’ve been asked in the job advert.

But here’s the thing...

And I’m sure if you’ve ever been in the position of an employer, you’ve discovered - like I have - that this is a bit of a misconception.

At the application stage, your prospective employer does not want to see that you are some off-the-wall maverick; they simply want to see that you can do what they’ve asked for.

And that you are able to do it to a high quality.

Reader, you would not believe the amount of people who applied for the position I advertised without completing the basic tasks I asked for to support the application.

Some people made no reference to them.

But some people actually asked if I should require any further information...

Yes, please - the extra information I asked for originally!

Now, I know, dear Reader, that you’re tuned in and switched on. I know you wouldn’t make this mistake...

But frankly, I’ve been so astonished by people not reading the initial advert that today I just had to get this off my chest.

It’s like when you were at school and the teacher always told you to read the exam questions properly.

We all did it; we all skipped through the question because we were so sure of the answer. Only to realise later that if we’d read to the end we’d have found another twist to the question that meant we’d got it wrong.

We were eager. We were cocky. And that’s fair enough when you’re at school, right?

But by the time you’re applying for jobs, when you’re carving out a career - you need to get a bit more serious and not let your eagerness get the better of you.

When you’re applying for a new job, you’ve got to remember... so are a load of other people.

That means that your prospective employer has a load of applications on his or her desk that they’ve got to wade through.

And as they’re wading through them, the quickest way for them to sort through the possibilities is to eliminate anyone who hasn’t actually provided the requested details.

A prospective employer does not want to be chasing you for more information.

It doesn’t matter how good what you’ve sent in is - by not showing the ability to follow a simple instruction you’ll have already lost serious ground. You might well have lost your chance altogether.

So, do seriously bear in mind...

Whenever you find yourself in the position where you’re applying for a new job, or if you’re guiding your kids through their application...

Make sure you read through the job advertisement fully and provide everything that has been asked for.

I know it sounds obvious but, believe me; you’d be surprised how many people fall at this seemingly simple hurdle.

Best Wishes,
Glenn Fisher
