Top Tips To Reduce Your Energy Bills
by Glenn Fisher
At the end of last week, energy prices went wrong!
British Gas raised their gas prices by a staggering 35% and their electricity prices shot up 9%.
This disastrous rise followed on from EDF Energy who had only recently increased their own prices by 22% and 17% for gas and energy respectively.
I don’t like to be negative but the sad truth is: it’s only going to get worse.
I was hoping to be able to advise Shortcut readers to switch to price fixed tariffs, but before anyone could act, pretty much every energy company got rid of them!
Energy bosses and the Government all talk about helping the worst affected but nobody seems concerned with the average person like me or you.
So, I thought today, to try to help alleviate some of the strain of the price hikes, I’d recap on the best ways to cut your energy bills down a peg or two...
How to save a packet on your energy bills
- Washing machine - Switching your standard temperature of your washing machine to 30 degrees could knock a third off the energy your machine uses.
- Light bulbs - First off, if you haven’t already, switch ALL the light bulbs in your house to energy saving ones. For each bulb you change you could save around £8 or £9.
Secondly, when you’re not in the room, turn off the light. It’s little things like this that, added up over time, noticeably reduce your bills. (This goes for all electrical appliances too - TVs, stereos, PCs - when not using them, turn them off.) - Heating - It’s summer and it’s pretty hot right now, so turn off the heating. If it does get a bit cooler, before putting the heating on, consider if a jumper or a jacket would do the job - in most cases you’ll find it will and that means cheaper bills. If you have to turn on the heating, knock the thermostat down a couple of notches.
- Radiators - This might sound slightly strange but foil- back your radiators. The foil will act as a reflector and send heat back into your room.
- Insulation - Now is the time to invest in proper, energy efficient insulation. You can lose so much energy through your roof and walls because of poor insulation. Though it might require a lump sum payment now, in the long term, with energy prices likely to continue upwards, it’s worth it.
Best Wishes,
