The One Thing You Can Do Today To Improve Your Copywriting
by Glenn Fisher
It’s annoying. But it is easy...And it’s one of the best ways to learn how to write great copy.
Problem is, when people start out, they tend to be either too arrogant or too lazy to actually do this.
It’s a shame.
Because every top copywriter I’ve ever spoken to remembers having done this, at least a few times.
And the more I think about it - and the more I write myself - I realise how important this technique is.
Before you get down to the nitty-gritty - like making headlines stronger, bringing out the benefits of a product, or introducing an irresistible offer...
You’ll much better spend your time doing this.
Doing what?
Writing out good copy by hand.
Boring, right?
Maybe so, but trust me here. If you want to write decent sales copy for your business, doing this will form the strongest foundation possible.
Everything after will be so much easier.
It’s no big secret. And it isn’t fancy. But it works.
You probably know that learning something in this way is known as ‘rote learning’. And there’s a ton of debate on how effective rote learning is.
A lot of people are dismissive of it. But when it comes to writing sales copy, it will help you no end.
You see, by writing out a sales letter over and over you’ll start to pick up the style, the grammar, the sentence structure, the pacing.
You’ll start to get a feel for it.
Sure, you might not realise the reason ‘why’ something is worded in a particular way - understanding that will come later - but you will understand ‘how’ it is worded and ‘how’ to emulate the wording.
After writing out a good sales promotion a few times, when it comes to writing something for your own product or service, you’ll find it much easier.
It will be a lot more natural.
One thing you can do today to improve your copywriting
Whatever niche area your business is in, take a look at the sales promotions that are working for your competition. If your wondering which are working, it’s not rocket science...
Basically, if you’ve seen the same promotion on a number of occasions - more than likely it’s working well.
So, get hold of a copy and take the time to write it out. And after you’ve written it once... do it again.
And then, if you really want to get good at this. Do it again.
You don’t have to do it all in one go. An hour here, an hour there is fine. What’s important is that you write it out exactly as it’s written and repeat it as many times as you can bear.
If the thought of doing this causes convulsions of utter agony, then to be honest, I’d look to freelance out your copywriting.
No copywriting guru is going to be able to help you. Because any copywriting guru worth their salt, if they’re being honest, will tell you to do this.
You could be told all the greatest copywriting secrets in the world, but if you haven’t got a basic foundation to build on, they’ll be useless.
So, if you want to write better sales copy for your business, whatever your business may be, take some time today to investigate your competition.
Study the promotional material they’re sending out. Look to see what’s working well and copy it out by hand as many times as you can.
Make the effort to do that and you’ll already be hundred steps ahead of any other wannabe copywriter.
Best Wishes,
